An underpaid claim is one that was paid but less than it should have been. Among other things this can happen when payers apply the wrong fee schedule or network status to the claim or when payers bundle procedures that shouldn’t have been bundled. Sometimes it is just a payer error. Identifying partial denials and underpaid claims requires the watchful eye of a payment poster who is familiar with your various payers. Payment posters must pay close attention to denied lines of service to pick up on underpaid claims. If you are not monitoring all of your EOB’s and checking on the follow up performed, chances are you are losing revenues due to underpaid claims and partial denials. This leakage of reimbursement often times goes unnoticed by the practice owner. Sometimes it is what you don't know that is hurting your bottom line.
At CRS we review all EOB’s with a fine-toothed comb to find partial denials and underpaid claims and fix them so assure full reimbursement. We coordinate with our clients the need for additional information when required. We also use the information we learn through this process to educate our clients to improve process and prevent future reoccurrences of the same denials.
